Recently a gentleman moved in a few doors down. The other day while I was on my way out for errands, after our usual hello’s, he asked me what I did. I answered, “I enjoy reading, swimming, cooking, writing, watching movies.”
He laughed and said “I meant for a living, your vehicle doesn’t seem to follow any kind of schedule and I was just curious” “Ahh yes, I live in a rhythm that isn’t usual for most. I’m a creator of sorts, I cook, I write and live. What do you enjoy doing?”
He replied “I’m installing high speed internet cables under the city right now”
I replied “Ahh interesting stuff, what do you like to do for fun?” He said “I’ll let you know when I have some”
This saddened my heart a few ways. I’ve found most people ask others what they do for a living to decide how much respect, and kindness they should show them. However, I believe the janitor should receive the same respect as the CEO. We’re all out here doing the best that we can.
Not that this is what my neighbor was doing, as he’s a Kind, small-town boy. He was genuinely curious.
This isn’t common practice in every circle I’ve encountered though.
Once upon a time – I used to answer this question the same as most – with my career. It wasn’t until a met a gentleman that politely asked rather what I enjoyed doing for fun. I thought to myself, how refreshing.
Since then I stopped replying with how I support myself, rather with what I enjoy doing. Sometimes I’ll get real creative and reply with “I’m the CEO of vibration” or “I make my world go around” which always gets a laugh. My new favorite though is “I live in rhythm”
I suppose what I’m trying to say is, you are so much more than your career and you should never reduce yourself to survival, and status structure. Also, It’s possible to live in a way that most can’t tell if you are working, or playing – even if it looks like extremely hard work to those on the outside, its simply play to you.
Be kind to each other, take care.
